Grass Off
A lawn of 1,048,576 blades. You start with your bare hands.
Every blade you see is a real blade, and there are a million of them out there. You pull them one by one — it takes about half a minute of honest work before you can afford a pair of nail scissors, and that is entirely the point.
Then it starts to move. Garden shears. A scythe. A string trimmer. A push mower. A tractor. And finally a harvester wide enough to swallow the whole lawn in a few passes.
Each tool is a jump, never an increment. Each one pulls the camera further back, until the entire field fits on the screen and you can finally see the pattern you left behind.
The stripes are real. Nothing is painted on. Cut grass lies down in the direction you passed, neighbouring passes lie the opposite way, and the light catches each one differently. It is the same reason a football pitch is striped — and if the grass stands back up, the stripes genuinely disappear.
When the lawn is done, the season turns. New palette, tall grass everywhere again, and you are back to bare hands with no tools and no coins. Only the knack stays with you.
There is no timer, no fail state and nothing chasing you. Just a very large lawn, a bit of wind, and the sound of grass giving way.
Controls
- Drag across the grass to pull it
- Right mouse button — or arrow keys / WASD — to move around the lawn
- Drag on the minimap to jump anywhere
- Push the cursor to the edge of the screen and the view follows
- M to mute
Your progress saves by itself.
Made of almost nothing
The whole game is a single 52 KB HTML file. No images, no audio files, no libraries, no engine.
- Every blade is drawn by the graphics card in one draw call — over four million on screen at 60fps
- The wind, the birds, and the tearing sound of grass are synthesized live, not recorded
- The lawn is a 1024×1024 array where one pixel is one blade of grass
Needs WebGL2 — any recent Chrome, Edge or Firefox will do.
